The Humanitas Learning Team

James Sherrard

I’m a passionate and highly accomplished educator who graduated with Distinction from King's College London. As the founder of Humanitas Learning, I am experienced in tutoring a wide range of subjects and levels. I recently gave a lecture at Yale Art Gallery and am currently delivering a course on HR and business ethics with a leading law firm.

I began tutoring while completing my BA in Philosophy and Politics at the University of Sheffield. I underwent teacher training and a placement at Silverdale School. Finishing top of my class, I was asked to stay on and continue teaching at the school while completing my own studies. Additionally, I ran the ‘Philosophy in the City’ program, offering free tuition to disadvantaged students throughout South Yorkshire.

I completed my MA in Philosophy at King's College London, achieving the highest mark on my course (87) for my paper on Heidegger and graduating with a Distinction overall. After graduating, I worked as a Learning and Curriculum Manager for colleges and schools in Yorkshire. This gave me expert knowledge of the syllabus and mark scheme across examining bodies.

I channelled this experience into online tutoring and established a large network of dedicated students. My wide-ranging expertise and compassionate, personalised approach allow me to quickly identify a student’s needs and develop a learning plan that’s right for them. I’ve helped GCSE English pupils to rise from Level 4 to Level 9 and guided students into top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. As an undergraduate tutor, I have worked with students at Cambridge, UCL and Kuwait University – helping one to ascend from an average mark of 35 to an overall grade of 78 and a place on a PhD course.

Hello, my name is Ben. I tutor history and English Language at Humanitas Learning. I firmly believe that, if you think history is boring, you’ve been taught it wrong! As well as providing dynamic and stimulating tutoring sessions, I create content for Humanitas, including model answers and you will see me pop up in several of our videos.

I’ve always been interested in the past, but I can trace my love of history back to year 3 and one teacher who opened my eyes to it. At school I achieved 6 A* and 5 A grades at GCSE, 2 A grades, one in English Language, and an A* in A-Level history. Progressing to university, I achieved a first-class honours degree in German and History from the University of Warwick in 2016, and have recently completed my Masters in Public History at the University of York, graduating with a distinction in February 2024 having achieved a mark of 80 in my dissertation.

But my teaching style goes beyond just academia. I have learned through my tutoring experience that students gain the most when they truly enjoy a subject. One of my former students even said after one session that she was enjoying German grammar! My background in and passion for theatre has given me a charismatic, confident, personable style, and I guarantee enjoyable, fun-filled lessons, packed with discussions around the topic and characters involved, while also sharing my skill for academia and doing well in those pesky exams. Throughout my Masters, I have been proofreading my colleagues’ essays, offering feedback on structure, style, flow and so on. I have also given a summary of my dissertation at an academic conference, which was described by one viewer as a “tour de force of public speaking”.

I’m looking forward to meeting with you, developing a passion for history and the English language with you, and unlocking your potential with confidence in the classroom and beyond. Let’s make history!

I am a motivated and devoted tutor who has helped countless students develop their skills in philosophy and religious studies. I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a 1st Class BA in Philosophy, and achieved a Distinction at MA level in the same department. I won a PhD funding competition and have started my doctoral dissertation on a topic relating to animal ethics. I have spoken at many conferences and my talks have been characterised as ‘brilliant’ and ‘innovative’.

I believe that learning is like opening a new art gallery in your mind. Decorating and furnishing the room may seem a little scary, but I will be here to support you every single step of the way. Throughout my wide teaching experience, I have developed unique learning strategies to enhance your capacity to understand and enjoy the content. I have helped students of all levels of ability to improve their critical reasoning and essay writing skills. Studying philosophy at PhD level has equipped me with excellent analytical and research skills which I can teach to you.

I have an expert knowledge of the syllabus and mark scheme across examining bodies. As a First class graduate, I also teach undergraduate students the skills required to unlock the top grades.

Due to my naturally joyful and determined nature, I ensure that every lesson is both fun and challenging!

I am an experienced and knowledgeable graduate who currently works in education policy. At Humanitas Learning, I produce cutting-edge resources to enhance lessons and support you in your learning.

Drawing on my extensive knowledge of the examining bodies and mark schemes, I ensure that the offered learning resources are of the highest quality and align perfectly with the course content and exam specifications relevant for each subject level. As all of our materials are created in-house, I am able to tailor and develop them according to your specific goals and requirements. Once our tutors have created your personalised learning plan, I will support them by devising exercises and revision sheets to guide you towards success.

I have been privileged to enjoy in-depth study of many humanities disciplines and am well-rounded in a number of overlapping subjects such as, history, philosophy and politics. At A-Level, I studied Classical Civilisation, Philosophy, and Politics (A*AA). I was one of only two students at my college ever to achieve 100% for a final Politics exam. I then went on to the University of Sheffield to study Politics and Philosophy at undergraduate level, followed by a master’s degree in Modern History, achieving a distinction.

I have three years of experience working in education policy and have a detailed knowledge of all examining bodies.
