James Sherrard
FOUNDER OF HUMANITAS LEARNING
#fhtogglels/Read Full Bio/Close/eb
Greetings! I am passionate and highly accomplished educator with a first-class master’s degree from King’s College London. As the founder of Humanitas Learning, I have thousands of hours experience tutoring a range of subjects from GCSE to undergraduate level. I recently delivered a lecture at Yale University Art Gallery and am starting my PhD in Philosophy at the University of Warwick in 2025.
I began tutoring while completing my BA in Philosophy and Politics at the University of Sheffield. I completed a teacher training module which included a placement at Silverdale School. Finishing top of my class, I was asked to stay on and continue teaching while concluding my own studies. I proceeded to complete my MA in Philosophy at King’s College London, achieving the highest mark on my course for my paper on Heidegger (87), graduating with Distinction overall.
Building on my academic success, I worked as a Learning and Curriculum Manager, and as a tutor for some of the UK’s leading agencies. This gave me expert knowledge of the syllabi and mark schemes across examining bodies. Noticing a lack of expert tutoring companies specialising in the humanities, I established Humanitas Learning in 2022 and quickly developed a large network of aspiring students.
My wide-ranging expertise and compassionate, personalised approach allow me to quickly identify a student’s unique needs and develop a learning plan that’s right for them. I’ve helped GCSE English pupils to rise from Level 4 to Level 9 and guided A-level students into top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. I currently work with students at top schools, including Harrow and Saint Paul’s School and assist with national essay competitions. As an undergraduate tutor, I have worked with students at Cambridge, UCL and Kuwait University – helping one to ascend from an average mark of 35 to an overall grade of 78 and a place on a PhD course.
I live beside the Peak District with my wife and enjoy hiking, museums and writing poetry.

Ben Huntley
TUTOR OF HISTORY AND ENGLISH
#fhtogglels/Read Full Bio/Close/eb
Hello, my name is Ben. I tutor history and English Language at Humanitas Learning. I firmly believe that, if you think those subjects are boring, you’ve been taught them wrong! As well as providing dynamic and stimulating tutoring sessions, I create content for Humanitas, including model answers and you will see me pop up in several of our videos.
I’ve always been interested in the past, but I can trace my love of history back to year 3 and one teacher who opened my eyes to it. At school I achieved 6 A* and 5 A grades at GCSE, 2 A grades, one in English Language, and an A* in A-Level history. Progressing to university, I achieved a first-class honours degree in German and History from the University of Warwick in 2016, and have recently completed my Masters in Public History at the University of York, graduating with a distinction in February 2024 having achieved a mark of 80 in my dissertation. In January 2025 I started studying for my PhD at Bournemouth University in the history of motorsport. I also share my love of history by attending and speaking at multiple history conferences, most recently at the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY.
But my teaching style goes beyond just academia. I have learned through my tutoring experience that students gain the most when they truly enjoy a subject. One of my former students even said after one session that she was enjoying German grammar! My background in and passion for theatre has given me a charismatic, confident, personable style, and I guarantee enjoyable, fun-filled lessons, packed with discussions around the topic and characters involved, while also sharing my skill for academia and doing well in those pesky exams. Throughout my Masters, I have been proofreading my colleagues’ essays, offering feedback on structure, style, flow and so on. I have also given a summary of my dissertation at an academic conference, which was described by one viewer as a “tour de force of public speaking”.
I’m looking forward to meeting with you, developing a passion for history and the English language with you, and unlocking your potential with confidence in the classroom and beyond. Let’s make history!

Delphine Choquel
TUTOR OF PHILOSOPHY AND FRENCH
#fhtogglels/Read Full Bio/Close/eb
Bonjour! I'm Delphine Choquel, a native French speaker and passionate tutor at Humanitas Learning. Originally from France, I bring a wealth of linguistic and academic expertise to my teaching. I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a First Class BA in Philosophy (2022) and went on to achieve a Distinction in my MA from the same department. Currently, I'm pursuing my PhD in animal ethics, having won a prestigious funding competition for my research. My work has been presented at numerous conferences, where my talks have been lauded as "brilliant" and "innovative." In addition to my role at Humanitas, I also teach undergraduate philosophy students at the University of Sheffield.
As a highly experienced French tutor, I'm passionate about helping students unlock the beauty and richness of the French language. I've developed unique and effective learning strategies to enhance both conversational fluency and academic understanding, and I have a proven track record of helping students improve their communication skills and achieve top marks in written and oral exams. My native fluency, coupled with my deep understanding of the syllabus and mark schemes across all examining bodies, ensures that my students receive the highest quality instruction.
My background in philosophy has honed my analytical and research skills, which I apply to tailor my teaching to each student's individual needs. As a First Class graduate, I'm also well-equipped to support undergraduate students in both philosophy and French, helping them develop the essay writing and research skills necessary for academic success.
I believe that learning should be an enjoyable experience, and I bring a joyful and determined approach to every lesson, ensuring both fun and challenge. Outside of teaching, I enjoy kiting, ice skating, and caring for animals.

Ben Pryce
TUTOR OF ENGLISH, PHILOSOPHY & RELIGIOUS STUDIES
#fhtogglels/Read Full Bio/Close/eb
Nice to meet you! I am an enthusiastic and highly experienced tutor of English, Philosophy and Religious Studies. During my four years at Explore Learning I built up considerable tutoring experience working with students from a diverse range of backgrounds and levels of ability. Due to my friendly and dynamic teaching style, I was named my centre’s Tutor of the Year in 2018.
I completed a joint honours degree in Economics and Philosophy in 2022, which satisfied my broad academic interests and allowed me to dive deep into some of the subject areas I enjoy the most. My essay on the implications of Kantian ethics for free will was published in Ethica, an undergraduate journal, in 2021.
I’m passionate about teaching practice and the education system itself. This is something I realised increasingly through my studies, particularly during a Philosophy of Education module (for which I scored 83%), which allowed me to deepen and explore my understanding of what it means to be a teacher. The philosophy lesson I taught in a local school as part of this module was the highlight of my degree. I attained one of my highest marks for my essay on the importance of enthusiastic teachers in my own educational journey. These experiences introduced me to the broad range of styles that can be effective in different contexts and helped me to recognise my desire to make teaching my vocation.
My interests in religious and philosophical ideas extend beyond the purely academic, however, and I am passionate about the interplay between faith and reason outside the classroom. This is reflected in my decision to pursue teaching as a career, but also in my work with children and young people through leading discussions for the Alpha Course. I will combine my leadership experience in these settings with my love of working with young people next academic year as I work towards attaining Qualified Teacher Status through a Sheffield-based training programme. I have also undergone additional safeguarding training as part of my work with children and youth.
